Home Base Homeschool

Updated: Oct 18, 2025

No matter what method or style of homeschooling you use, having a home base is essential for organization to help keep things running smoothly.

Whether you are a traditional homeschooler with a designated homeschool room or a worldschooler who does their learning on the go, having a Home Base will bring structure, consistency, and organization to your homeschooling journey. Organization gives you the freedom to be creative by making time to do the things you want to, rather than wasting time trying to find the supplies you need.

Location:

Home Base is the place where your child knows that serious work is done or a place where schooling is centralized. It may be an office, homeschool room, or workspace such as a desk - but it also could be the couch, a bookshelf in the living room, or the picnic table on the patio. It is simply the place where the "homeschooling" is centrally located.

This doesn't mean this is the place where you do all your work, but it is the place your child knows to report to when you want them to.

Purpose:

Home base might be where you start the day or simply where all the things go at the end of day. It might be where independent work is done or only where important assessments are taken. Think of it like an anchor. So even if you aren't the type to have a dedicated learning space, this place will act as a constant to help keep you all grounded and organized.

Plan:

Decide where and what function you want your home base to serve based off your homeschooling style and your family's needs.

Here are some ideas to start planning:

1. Where would this area best be located? Consider space limitations in your home.

2. When and how often would you use it?

3. What purpose do you want it to serve? For example, would it function as a work space or only as a supply area? Would you complete assessments there or give the day's instructions?

Now it's your turn!

Where is your home base located in your home and what purpose do you use it for? Answer in the comments!
