Homeschooling stretched across the weekend provides a unique opportunity to accomplish more activities without the stress.

Everybody covets their weekends, right? We work all week to get a few days of rest, relaxation, and fun. But does it have to be this way? Does everybody experience this kind of work week? Of course not! Many would think it would be crazy to WANT work on the weekend... but here's why you might find it's actually beneficial!

Here's a bold fact.
Schooling doesn't have to be Monday through Friday. The traditional school schedule is a parameter we self-impose based on societal conditioning and perceived convenience. The truth is learning can be everyday! Modifying your weekly schedule to accomplish schooling throughout the weekend can actually be a great way to do LESS schooling each day.
History vs Reality.
Many families find the rigidity of a traditional schedule to cause undue pressure. The reason it was implemented was to prepare students for a "typical work week," but it is unrealistic for many careers - so trying to adhere to it can be unnecessary. Many professions work the weekends, work all week, or have modified work weeks, such as firefighters, nurses, retail workers, entrepreneurs, and stay-at-home parents. However, many families find themselves stuck trying to model the public school system and the typical work week schedule when they could find freedom in weekend schooling instead.
The Benefits:
It might sound counterintuitive to extend your school week into the weekend, but some families find that they can accomplish less schooling per day by stretching a few hours into the weekend. It also benefits families who don't have a typical work week themselves or don't want to do schooling in the evening hours after a full work day of thier own. When homeschooling becomes burdensome, families aren't successful. Realizing that you can school less hours per day or not having to adhere to a traditional school schedule can alleviate a lot of that stress.
Weekend Schedule Options:
Week-Long Schooling:
One of the easiest and stress-free ways to incorporate weekend schooling is to reduce the number of hours you school during the week and add those onto the weekend days. That could mean only doing two hours of schooling every day as opposed to trying to squeeze four hours or more of all your subjects into the typical work week per day. Alternatively, it could mean incorporating only certain subjects on the weekend. For example, doing the core subjects of math and language arts throughout the week and doing science and social studies on the weekend. Another option is to do extracurricular and enrichment lessons on the weekend - projects, activities, games, field trips, or life skills. Some states require a certain number of school hours per year and adding enrichment opportunities on the weekend is a great, stress-free way to complete all those hours without overburdening every day of the week.
Weekend Modified Schooling:
Doing school work on the weekend and creating a new "weekend" is another great option to use the weekend to your advantage. This would mean doing school on Saturday and Sunday and taking two other days of the week, such as Monday/Tuesday or Wednesday/Friday, to become your new "days off." This is especially beneficial for families who already have a work schedule where they work on the weekends, but it also is convenient for families who want to take advantage of the discounts weekdays provide for activities and field trips. Because the weekends are traditionally when families go to museums or parks, they typically are more expensive - so you can find majors discounts by going on weekdays. You also will find they are less busy and you can have these attractions all to yourselves.
Weekend-Only Schooling:
If you are doing unschooling or worldschooling, you already prioritize educating in non-traditional and unconventional ways. You may find that you can accomplish all your educational goals using several hours throughout the weekend and leave the weekdays free. Even if you hold to a more traditional style, but you work throughout the week, you may find that using the weekends are your only option to get several hours of schooling done on the weekends. If you live in a state that doesn't require a set amount of hours or you have older, more independent learners - you may be able to accomplish most of your schooling on the weekends only and use a few more hours per week to supplement other lessons to meet all your educational goals.
